Local football amazing

Another amazing year of football has nearly come to a close in our state.  All that’s left is the CUSA and SWAC championship games, featuring Southern Miss and Alcorn State, respectively, this weekend.  And, then, of course, the Big Three are headed to bowl games in a few weeks.

I’ve often thought to myself, “Why do we love football so much?”  One would be hard pressed to find a single person over 14 who doesn’t at least have a favorite team.

I think that football players are the modern day equivalent of gladiators.  And, we yearn to gather together for tailgates and be social with others of like minds.  Football and food just bring us closer together.

Indeed our communities here in Copiah County have enjoyed the successes of our teams. In 2015, the Indians played into the third round of the state 3As.  The Colonels reached the semis of the Class AAAA Div. 1s.  The Tigers qualified for the playoffs for the first time in years.  And, the Wolfpack have provided us with a state championship team and a runner-up in recent years.  All of this success on the gridiron, like it or not, instills pride.  Winning on the football field strengthens the fabric of our communities.

Our state, too, is a closer knit community, thanks to the success in recent years of the Bulldogs, Rebels, Golden Eagles and Braves, Statesmen.

Sans the result of the Egg Bowl the past couple of years, these are good times.
