The Copiah Lady Colonels are off to a 1-0 start in fastpitch after winning at Manchester Academy 17-6 last Friday.
Copiah plated 2 in the first and lead 7-2 after after a five-run third. The Lady Colonels exploded for 10 runs in the top of the fourth, highlighted by a 3-run home run by senior Madison Humphreys.
The Lady Mavericks scored 2 in the third and pushed 4 runs across in the bottom of the fourth in the run-rule shortened game.
“We played well. It’s good to win our first game of the season,” Copiah Head Coach Terry Bauer said.
Brandi Redus (1-0) picked up the win on the mound for Copiah. She pitched two scoreless innings before giving way to Shelby Wilson in the third. The two pitchers allowed 9 hits and were in good hands with the Copiah defense, which committed no errors.
“We must continue to play good defense. Opposing teams are going to get their hits, and we have to outhit them to win. So, good defense is a must,” Bauer said.
Copiah pounded out 11 hits.
Humphreys, a senior, added a double and had 5 RBI’s to lead Copiah at the plate. Fellow seniors Emily Ferrell (3 hits, a double, 2 RBIs) and Karley Bailey (2 hits, a double), along with eighth-grader McKinna Smith (2 hits, 3 RBI) were Copiah’s other offensive leaders. Hannah Walls added an RBI.
The Maverick defense committed 6 errors to aid Copiah.
In junior varsity action, the Lady Colonels won 10-0 behind a strong pitching performance by seventh-grader Sarah Grace Smith.
