Cheer them on!
Mississippians get behind their sports teams. While we might disagree about Republican vs. Democrat or tax cuts vs. spending increases, we are vigorously going to support our collegiate teams–even when our favorite isn’t playing in the post-season.
When I was a junior in high school, the Southern Miss Golden Eagle basketball team won the National Invitational Tournament. Every game, they defeated somebody they weren’t supposed to en route to the title. Many of those players had transferred to USM from Co-Lin. Even Head Coach M. K. Turk had spent time as a coach of the Wolves. Though our family is 100% Bulldogs, we backed the Golden Eagles because they were from Mississippi. It was fun.
A few years ago when State rode Hunter Renfroe into the finals of the College World Series, Mississippi wasn’t a red state or a blue state. It was a maroon state. Everyone came together a few years earlier when Steve McNair led Alcorn State into the playoffs and a couple of years later when the his Titans nearly won the Super Bowl. We love our Mississippi athletes.
So, though the Lady Bulldogs of MSU face the daunting task of unseating top-ranked UConn in the Women’s Final Four this weekend, cheer for them. Believe in them. Upsets can happen!
