New solid waste contract requires $1 per month increase to citizens

City officials ratified a new solid waste contract with Waste Management, the low bidder, effective January 1, 2020. An additional $1.00 per month will be added to each water/waste bill. Twice a week pickup will continue but Waste Management will no longer run a Wednesday route for recyclables. Officials could not fit the cost of recycling by the contractor into a tight budget. Alternate recycling plans being considered include placing dumpsters in strategic places for citizens to deposit recyclables in. Mayor’s Comments Mayor Garland extended condolences to a city employee in the loss of a relative and thanked employees for their attention to details. Other Matters An executive session was held for personnel and one employee was terminated and another placed on personal leave until January 11 in the Public Works/Water Department. Claims totaling $272,850 were allowed as officials adjourned until January 6, 2020 at 6 p.m.
