Hazlehurst City Board tackles water bill payment woes

By Anna Coates
The Hazlehurst Board of Aldermen met in regular session May 5 at City Hall.
Joining Mayor Shirley Sandifer and Board Attorney Tim Rutland were all five aldermen: Frank Jones, Ward 1; Ron Sims, Ward 2; Fred Sandifer, Ward 3; Jeremy McKinzie, Ward 4; and Rick Akin, Ward 5.
Members discussed amending the ordinance governing operation of the city water department concerning procedures affecting customers with delinquent accounts. Rutland will draft a proposal and present it for adoption at the next meeting.
Mayor Sandifer announced the Emergency Response Plan (ERP) for the water system has been updated in accordance with America’s Water Infrastructure Act of 2018 (AWIA) Section 2013(b). The act requires community water systems serving populations greater than 3,300 to annually update an ERP that includes risk and resilience assessment.

The public is invited to the next meeting at 6 p.m. June 2 at City Hall.
