The July 2 board meeting of the City of Crystal Springs began with Major Nathan Konz, officer in charge of the Innovative Readiness Training group working at Camp Kamassa, thanking the city for its hospitality since the group arrived May 30. Over 500 soldiers and marines will have worked on the camp by Aug. 2 when they end this year’s work. The board thanked Konz and his team for everything they are doing.
Lt. Larry Haynes, with the police department, was promoted to captain for one day with no salary change and then the board accepted his resignation due to his retirement, effective June 30. Haynes was approved to purchase his service weapon for $1. Board members thanked him for his dedication and service for the past 12 years with the city and 18 years prior with the Sheriff’s Office.
In other police business, Chief Tony Hemphill reported there were no incidents with the Tomato Festival other than a few medical calls. He is still working to obtain vehicles from Mack Haik and plans to get with some people at the Armory about lifesaving training for some of his men in case there is the need when they are on a call.
There is a new federal salary threshold effective July 1. The city will comply and plans to meet to review the new law and determine its impact for the upcoming fiscal year.
Hitachi Energy USA Inc was approved for a 2024 tax exemption.
The board held a public hearing to discuss the condition of the property at 345 Beverly Circle, owned by Rachel Fay Gordin who did not attend the meeting. She would like to clean the property but has no plan, so the board adjudicated the property in case the property owner does not clean it and the city needs to do so.

The rehabbing of the old water well on Six Mile Road will begin soon. Bids were solicited to repair a major leak on South Jackson Street, and the board approved the lowest bid which was from Mitchell Contracting for $73,855.
Resident Ray Adams asked if a piece of property he owns at 201 East Cayuga St. needs to be rezoned to have a home on the property. It was determined it is zoned limited industrial, and it would not have to be rezoned for Adams to build a home on it for his daughter. The board suggested he discuss his ideas with the building inspector, David Herrington.
Alderman Ray Brown allowed the Benson and Pickett families to request the closing of part of Piazza Street from 3 to 7 p.m., July 27, for a celebration. The board approved the request.
Alderman Steve Singleton said there is still an issue with trash and Alderwoman Michele Terrebonne agreed. Terrebonne said she gives a warning to the owner of the property if she sees something that needs to be cleaned up in Ward 4. If the property is not cleaned, a citation is issued.
Mayor Sally Garland mentioned the mobile home park on Bennett Street was erroneously zoned and both a hearing of the zoning board and a public hearing with the city board will take place. These meetings will be announced in the newspaper.
She mentioned several activities during the Tomato Festival that helped make it a success, including the Junior Auxiliary’s street party fireworks show for which heads of the fire, public works, parks and recreation, and police departments were sponsors along with others.
