Hal Richardson

Hal Stephen Richardson, 68, of Hazlehurst, passed away Jan. 3, 2025, at his home in Madison after a short battle with re-occurring pancreatic cancer.

Hal was born on Sept. 23, 1956; the only child of Julia Ancaroni Richardson and Henry Propst “Rich” Richardson.

Hal graduated from Copiah Academy and obtained his degree from Mississippi State University in 1978. He married Freida McElhenney in 2002, and together they shared 22 years of love and cherished memories.

He dedicated many years to teaching at Forest Hill High School before retiring – a transition that brought him great joy. Hal collected antique clocks, mechanical watches, and fountain pens. He was an authority on men’s fashion. He especially enjoyed curating a booth at Antique Alley, where he sold vintage menswear and collectibles.

He had a lifelong passion for Mississippi State football, a love that began during childhood trips with his parents to bowl games across the country.

Hal had a deep love for history and a great sense of humor. He never met a stranger, always eager to connect with others through conversation. His kindness and relatability made him easy to be around. Hal was also passionate about his roots and spent a lot of time researching his Alabama heritage on his father’s side and his rich Italian heritage on his mother’s side.

He was an avid traveler and over the years, he and Freida made many wonderful memories on numerous trips around the world. Their most recent journey took them to Italy, where they explored Sicily and visited Hal’s family in Faenza.

He was preceded in death by his parents and beloved dog, Molly.

He is survived by his wife, Freida; their dog, Annie; his son, Robbie Richardson (Jordan); two grandchildren, Leon and Ayla Richardson; his daughter, Laura Munoz (Omar); and his stepson, Jason McElhenney. He is also survived by his cousin, whom he considered a sister, Linda Corra.

A celebration of life was held Jan. 8 at St. Martin Catholic Church in Hazlehurst. Stringer Family Funeral Services in Hazlehurst handled arrangements.
