Regular season winds down, playoffs begin
Three area football teams have secured playoff berths for the 2007 post-season, and one is a division champ.
This Friday night’s games, all regular season finales, are:
Hazlehurst, 5-4, the winner of Region 6-3A, plays at Crystal Springs
Copiah, 9-1, runner up in Div. 4-AA, is on the road at Presbyterian Christian this Friday night
Wesson, 8-1, runner up in Region 6-2A, has finished regular season play.
All three teams will likely be hosting first-round playoff games next Friday night, with opponents for each to be determined after Friday night’s games have concluded.
All three teams have played well into the late rounds of post-season play in recent years. Hazlehurst, who lost in the south semifinals last year, won a state 3A championship in 2005, after a runner-up South State season in 2004. The Colonels won their third state AA title after last season after finishing second in 2005. Wesson has been bumped in the first round in each of the past two seasons, but has faced one of the best teams in the state each time.
Hazlehurst is coached by Leon Perry. Copiah is coached by Scott Cline. Wesson is coached by Tommy Clopton. Kickoff for each of Friday night’s games is at 7 o’clock.
