Cobra basketball drops three

The Wesson Cobras and Lady Cobras basketball teams dropped 3 of 4 games in the Hillcrest tournament last week with the boys routing of Silliman 62-22 the only win of the tourney.
The Cobras (6-2) could not overcome an awful 2nd quarter effort against Leake Academy and wound up chasing the Rebels from behind before falling short 69-63. A late rally was led by Lonnie Reeves who finished the game with 23 points. Guard Cody King ended the game with 13 points. Matthew Cliburn and Josh Hart had 11 and 13 rebounds each respectively.
The Cobras rallied from the Tuesday night loss to whip Silliman 62-22 in a rout. The Cobras were led by Cliburn who finished with 15 points and 7 rebounds. Hart contributed with 9 points and 11 boards.
“We played 7 great quarters of basketball,” explained head coach Ron Kessler. “The second quarter of the Leake game cost us. We are proud of where we are at and look forward to starting district play Tuesday night against Loyd Star.”
The Lady Cobras (5-5) hit the court against the #1 team in the MPSA in the Lady Rebels of Leake. The Rebelettes pounded the Cobras with up tempo offense and high pressure defense to the tune of a 75-42 win. The Lady Cobras were led by Ann Shelby Davis’ 15 points and 8 boards. Marion Allen chipped in 10 points in the losing effort while Danielle Tadlock had 7 rebounds.
The young Lady Cobras came back Saturday and faced a cold offensive day against Silliman, dropping a close game 32-29. Allen had 10 points and Davis contributed 7 in the loss.
“Offensively, we were sluggish and I was a bit disappointed in how we handled the pressure defense,” added Lady Cobra head coach Hugh Webb. “Everybody (other teams) look bad against Leake. We just have to get better and create better shots and we will be ok.”
Both teams enter district play with winning records, something both coaches pointed out as being critical before the season started.
