Both Wesson Cobra soccer teams claimed important wins Thursday night against the McLaurin Tigers. The victories marked the third district wins for both the Cobras and the Lady Cobras. The boy’s team won a nail biter with a score of 2-1 and the girls won with an impressive score of 6-0.
In boy’s action, the game was close with both teams battling for the win. Blake Whittington was the first to get on the scoreboard with an assist from George Baker. The Tigers scored late in the first half leaving the game tied 1-1. During the second half, both teams played aggressively trying to gain the win. The Tigers weren’t able to break through the defensive efforts of Dustin Case, Justin Goodman, and Alan Stegall. Eighth grader, Austin Graham, was the only player to score during the second half. Graham’s speed and excellent footwork, paired with a perfect pass from Fink cinched the win for the Cobras. The Cobra’s record improves to 4-8, 3-3.
The Lady Cobras played one of their best games of the season and the Lady Tigers were not able to match their level of play. Dallas Jackson scored first with a free kick nearly twenty yards outside the goal. The first half ended with a score of 1-0. The Lady Cobras came on strong during the second half. Trystan Eschete scored twice, once on an impressive pass from Ceara Sturgis and again when McLaurin’s goalie mishandled a shot attempt. The next Lady Cobra goal was from Raiven Coleman who easily landed the goal on an assist from Stephanie Berry. Coleman scored again when she took advantage of another bobbled stop by McLaurin’s goalie. Dallas Jackson scored the final goal with another well placed direct kick. The defensive play of Brittany Cannon, Christy Jackson, and Dallas Jackson helped to secure the shut out. This win brings the Lady Cobra’s record to 10-5, 3-1.
