Walk against cancer at Relay For Life

Relay For Life is Friday night at county fairgrounds

The Copiah County Relay For Life will be held this Friday night in a new location – the county fairgrounds in Gallman.

Events will start at 6 p.m. Cancer survivors will take the field first in the Survivors Lap, which will kick off the relay. A reception for cancer survivors starts at 6:00 p.m. with the walking set to start after the opening ceremony at 7:00.

There will be live entertainment throughout the evening. Cindy Assink’s students will perform from 7:30 to 8:30. By Faith will perform from 8:30 to 10:00.

Teams will be cooking, so bring the whole family out to the Relay for supper Friday night. The  Prayer Warriors return with their popular fried fish and all kinds of good things, reports Relay volunteer Cecilia Carlton.

Security measures will be in place this year that will be new for Copiah Relay visitors. There will be a registration gate, one way in and one way out.

People with children must sign in and sign out – parents can’t drop off kids, no unaccompanied children will be allowed at the Relay.

The Boy Scouts will help prepare the luminaries and will light them at 10:00 for the most moving part of the Relay for many people.

Several youth groups, junior beta club, and others have volunteered to assist with the Relay this year, according to Carlton, as well as six teams of faithful Relay volunteers, many of whom have been helping with this event every year since its beginning. Many of the team members are cancer survivors themselves.

The Relay For Life is the American Cancer Society’s signature fundraising event. Copiah County’s past Relays have raised tens of thousands of dollars each year.

It is almost like starting over, breaking in a new location this year, points out Carlton, but with the help of faithful supporters the Copiah Relay should grow again to its former size and level of success.

Everyone is invited to come out to the Copiah County Fairgrounds in Gallman this Friday night to enjoy the fun, make a donation, or to cheer on their favorite Relay team.

Relay team members walk all night because cancer never sleeps.

The Copiah County Fairgrounds are located just west of the Gallman exit off Interstate 55.
