Copiah teams fall in Hillcrest tournament

Colonels, Lady Colonels fall in Hillcrest Tourney

Canton Academy outscored Copiah Academy 44-27 in the first half and went on to whip the Colonels 70-55 last week in Canton.

Canton led by twenty, 61-41, heading into the final period and coasted to the easy win even though they were outscored 14-9 in the final eight minutes.

Copiah’s Reece Hankins led all scorers with 18 points. Dennis Harper and Caleb Stewart were also in double figures for the Colonels with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Other CA scorers included Brandon Smith and Ben Boone with 5 points each, and Russell Hood and Adam Ganucheau with 3 points apiece.

Meanwhile, Canton had three players in double figures: Davin Riebock and Eddie Drane with 17 points each, followed by Mike Jerome with 14 points.

Wesson 58, Copiah 44

    After a lopsided 75-27 loss to Jackson Prep earlier in the week, the Copiah Academy Colonels fell to the Wesson High School Cobras 58-44 in the consolation game of the Hillcrest Christian Invitational Tournament last Saturday.

    Wesson led 8-5 after a low-scoring first period, then stretched its halftime lead to 29-20. The Cobras increased the margin to twenty, 47-27, before being outscored by CA 17-11 in the final eight minutes.

    Sophomore Dennis Harper led the Colonels with 11 points, followed closely by Caleb Stewart with 10 points. Other Copiah scorers included Brandon Smith with 9 points, Russell Hood with 8 points, and a trio of players with 2 points apiece: Drew Granger, Taylor Rigby, and Adam Ganucheau.  Wesson’s leading scorer was Tyler Lumley with 17 points, followed by Josh Hood with 14 points.

With the trio of losses, Copiah’s record now stands at 4-4.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
Jackson Prep 51, Copiah 24

    The Jackson Prep Lady Patriots jumped out to a 29-13 halftime lead and went on to beat the Copiah Academy Lady Colonels 51-24 in the first game of the Hillcrest Christian Invitational Tournament in Jackson last week.

    Prep led by nineteen, 41-22, at the end of the third quarter, and outscored CA 10-2 in the final eight minutes to win going away.

    Rachel Strait was Copiah’s leading scorer with 8 points, followed by Ashley Baham with 7 points. Other CA totals included Courtney Beach with 5 points, and Madelon Cline and Heather Teasley with 2 points each.

    Laura Lee Smith was the Lady Patriots’ leading scorer with 11 points.

Copiah 51, Canton 29

    The Copiah Academy Lady Colonels outscored Canton Academy in every quarter as they registered a 51-29 victory in Canton last week.

    CA led 14-5 after one period, 22-9 at the half, and 36-17 after three quarters. The Lady Colonels went on to outscore Canton 15-12 over the last eight minutes as they coasted to victory.

    Junior Madelon Cline led Copiah with 15 points. Teammate Amanda Pyron was also in double figures with 11 points. Other CA totals included Ashley Baham with 9 points, Lori Baham with 5 points, and a host of players with 2 points, including Rachel Strait, Heather Teasley, Courtney Beach, Brooke Wilson, and Nikki Hobkirk. Camryn Mitchell with one point closed out the Copiah scoring.

    

Wesson 48, Copiah 29

    Coach Hugh Webb’s Wesson High School Lady Cobras jumped out to a 16-4 first-quarter lead and went on to whip the Copiah Academy Lady Colonels 48-29 at the Hillcrest Christian Invitational consolation game last Saturday.

    Wesson, 6-3, led 31-9 at halftime before CA went on a 13-8 run in the third period that narrowed the deficit to 39-22. However, the Lady Colonels couldn’t get any closer as they fell to 4-8 on the season.

    Courtney Beach led Copiah with 8 points. Other CA scorers included Amanda Pyron with 6 points, Ashley Baham with 5 points, Lori Baham and Rachel Strait with 3 points each, and Brooke Wilson and Katie Vanlandingham with 2 points apiece.

    The Cobras had 10 players who got into the scoring column, led by Ann Shelby Davis with 12 points.
