Wesson boys, girls basketball teams off to great start

    The fast paced Wesson Cobras have turned up the heat on the basketball court in the young 2008 season and have feasted off of a 6-1 record to start the season.

    “We ought to be 7-0,”explained Wesson head coach Ron Kessler.  “We just need to continue to minimize turnovers and improve our defense to have a chance when district play begins.”

Pillow 81, Wesson 75 – The Cobras are led by forward Tyler Lumley’s 16 points and 8 rebounds.  Zach Fetcko and Jamar Sims pound home 13 apiece in the loss against the Mustangs.

Wesson 71, Copiah 40 – Kessler’s Cobras take the in-county matchup powered by guards Josh Hood and Cody Kings 12 points each.  Hunter Hood had a nice game in the win with 10 points and 8 rebounds.

Wesson 84, Dexter 82 – The Cobras suffered tired legs down the stretch but held on for the victory behind Lumley and Josh Hood’s 22 points each.  Lumley had 8 boards and Hood 6 assists in the big win in Wesson.

Wesson 78, St. Aloysius 58 – The Cobras saw Josh Hood break the 3-point record held by his late cousin Brant Hood.  Hood’s nine three pointers gave him the record and 27 points on the evening along with 6 rebounds.  King put in a great effort as well with 14 points, 5 assists, and 4 steals.

Wesson 61, Pelahatchie 57 – Lumley knocked down 19 points in the win and 7 rebounds.  Sims had 15 points while King had another nice evening with 12 points and 5 assists.

Wesson 66, Bogue Chitto 48 – Lumley and King had 15 points each.  Lumley had 9 boards.  King scattered the stats with 6 boards, 4 assists, and 4 steals.

Wesson 80, Cathedral 60 – Lumley hammered home 26 for the Cobras.  Josh Hood poured in 14 assists while King grabbed 7 boards and 5 assists in the win.

The Cobras have worked hard to push the ball down the court and pick up the tempo while spreading the wealth of the scoring amongst the Cobras.  “It’s a luxury to have someone else lead every night,” explained Kessler.  “Your opponents cannot key in on someone particular and it gives us so many options.  We are not there yet but the guys are working hard.”   

 

Young Lady Cobras start strong

    The Wesson Lady Cobras have used the disadvantage of having no seniors in the lineup to polish the game of its talented junior and sophomore classes to an impressive 5-2 record to start the year.

    Super talented junior Ann Shelby Davis continues to dominate with a 15.7 average to start the year along with an average of 4 assists and 4 steals.  The supporting cast has gotten stronger for head coach Hugh Webb.

Hillcrest 57, Wesson 52 – The Lady Cobras dropped the first game of the year to the MPSA Cougars powered by Davis’ 17 points.  Sharpshooter Ansley Schimmel nailed 14 in the loss.

Wesson 55, Copiah 33 – Webb’s Lady Cobras whipped in county foe Copiah Academy behind Schimmel’s 18 point effort.  Davis chipped in 12 points and 7 assists.

Wesson 77, Dexter 29 –  The Cobras shalacked the Lady Bulldogs behind Davis’ 20 point effort.  Guard Macie Case drilled 16 points while Schimmel grabbed 13 points, 5 assists, and 6 steals.

Wesson 69, St. Aloysius 39 –  The Lady Flashes were no match for Davis and the Cobras.  Davis nailed 16 points on the evening while Shauntay Walker picked up 9 rebounds.

Wesson 62, Pelahatchie 51 – The Cobras shalacked the Lady Bulldogs behind Davis’ 20 point effort.  Guard Macie Case drilled 16 points while Schimmel grabbed 13 points, 5 assists, and 6 steals.

Bogue Chitto 46, Wesson 33 – The Lady Cobras could not have thrown it in the ocean this night as a bad night took claim to this loss.  Davis had 16 points in the loss.

Wesson 56, Cathedral 23 – Wesson destroyed the Lady Waves behind Davis’ 14 points.  Schimmel had 12 points while post player Leah Greer chipped in 10 points on the evening.
