Wesson teams sweep through Wesson Invitational

The Wesson Lady Cobras (12-4, 3-0) basketball team had a successful holiday break by winning the Wesson Invitational and also slugging a tough Hinds AHS squad in the process to climb to 3-0 in district play.

“We are playing our best ball to this date,” explained head coach Hugh Webb.  “I am real pleased with the entire team as well as Anne Shelby Davis who is being the dominate player she can be right now.”

Webb also praised the play of Macie Case, Christina Fink, and Shauntay Walker over the holidays.

Wesson 76, St. Aloysius 28

The Wesson girls devoured the Flashes in the first round of the Wesson Invitational powered by 16 points from point guard Macie Case.  Anne Shelby Davis chipped in 15 points and 7 rebounds while Ansley Schimmel drilled 13 from the floor.

 Wesson 49, Enterprise 33

Macie Case dominated this contest with an outstanding performance of 19 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists and 5 steals.  The semi-final contest saw the Lady Cobras get 8 points and great defense from Christina Fink.

Wesson 53, Bogue Chitto 42

(Championship)

Wesson delivered a convincing thumping of the Lady Bobcats to avenge an earlier loss in the season at the right time.  Davis took the Lady Cobras under her wing and led them to the championship with 23 points and 10 rebounds.  Case fired in 13 points in support.

The Lady Cobras had three recognized in the tournament with Ansley Schimmel and Macie Case getting All-Tourney while Anne Shelby Davis was named tournament MVP.

Wesson 38, Hinds AHS 36

Danielle Tadlock came off the bench to sink critical free throws and a huge bucket to deliver a comeback dagger to the Bulldogs of Hinds AHS.  A silly foul on the other end of the floor sent Anne Shelby Davis to the line with three free throws and the game knotted at 36 all.  Davis missed the first then sunk the next two to send Hinds home unhappy and the Lady Cobras undefeated in district play.  Davis had 20 in the contest while Schimmel chipped in 11 points.

West Lincoln 43, Wesson 42

Davis had 26 for the Lady Cobras in a non-conference Saturday afternoon contest in Lincoln County.  The Lady Cobras comeback fell just short however giving Wesson native Lane Young’s Lady Bear squad the victory.

COBRAS ACTION

The Wesson Cobras (11-5, 1-2) went 3-0 in their own holiday tournament to capture the Wesson Invitational championship trophy.  Senior guard Cody King was named tournament MVP while Jeromy Smith and Tyler Lumley garnered all tournament honors.

 “We had a lot of bright spots in this tournament,” commented Wesson head coach Ron Kessler.  “Cody played very well and Jeromy stepped up big in the post for us.  We knew it would be around Christmas for him to be back to basketball shape and he is coming around when we need him.  I am pleased with our effort in the tournament.”

Wesson 79, St. Aloysius 57

Cody King started the tournament scorching the Flashes for 21 points and 10 rebounds while Jeromy Smith delivered 15 points and 11 boards on the evening.  Samuel King, who earned heavy praise from Kessler, had 12 points in the opening round victory.

Wesson 78, Natchez Cathedral 47

Tyler Lumley led the Cobras with 16 points in the second round victory while Josh Hood and Kyle Cross collected 11 points each in the blowout win.

Wesson 70, Enterprise 58

(Championship)

The Cobras beat the Jackets of Lincoln County in the championship game of the tourney powered by King’s 18 point, 12 rebound effort.  Lumley had 17 points and 8 rebounds while Samuel King had his best game with 16 points in capturing the championship.

Hinds AHS 80, Wesson 62

The Cobras played the Bulldogs tough all the way but fell short of the victory.  Point guard Josh Hood had 20 points to lead the offense while Cody King chipped in 12 points.  Jeromy Smith had 11 points and 7 rebounds on the night.

West Lincoln 69, Wesson 50

Wesson just plain ran out of gas in this non-conference matchup.  The Bears just beat up the Cobras Saturday afternoon.  Samuel King and Josh Hood had 9 points each while no Cobra scratched double digits.
