Wesson boys, girls pick up big wins

The Wesson Cobras (13-7) slushed through an 18 point first half with the Bears of West Lincoln to uncork in the second half for 68 points and an 84-77 double overtime win in Wesson.
Wesson Boys 84, West Lincoln 77
The Cobras got a 24 point effort from senior guard Josh Hood to pull off a dramatic comeback over the rival Bears. Senior guard Cody King put the Cobras into OT with a shot that tickled the net with 6 seconds remaining in regulation to set up the end result. King would finish with 16 points.
Tyler Lumley added 16 points and 7 rebounds in the win while post player Zach Fetcko turned in his best performance of the year draining 13 points off the bench.
“I asked for a never say die attitude at the half,” commented head coach Ron Kessler. “We changed defenses and West Lincoln forced shots and we swung the momentum. This was a huge win for us headed down the stretch.”
Loyd Star 95, Wesson Boys 52
The undefeated and #3 ranked Hornets were simply too much for the Cobras. Glen Thomas had 28 for the Hornets in the route in Wesson.
Josh Hood had 24 for the Cobras while Tyler Lumley added a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
Wesson Girls 42, Loyd Star 34
The Lady Cobras pushed to 6-0 in district play by once again spanking arch nemesis Loyd Star 42-34 in a heated rivalry that the Cobras swept.
Sharp shooter Ansley Schimmel paced the Lady Cobras with 16 points while junior Shauntay Walker contributed a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
The win improved the Lady Cobras to 15-5 on the season overall.
West Lincoln 45, Wesson Girls 36
Like kryptonite, the Lady Cobras have no answer for Wesson native Lane Young’s Lady Bears who swept the season series 2-0 with a 45-36 victory in Wesson.
Anne Shelby Davis accounted for half of the Lady Cobras points with 18 on the evening. Shauntay Walker added 8 points and 10 rebounds in the loss to the Lady Bears.
