Action heating up at post-season b-ball tournaments
Basketball playoffs are in full swing this week and schools from Copiah County are hosting two of the post-season tournaments.
Copiah Academy is the site for the MPSA South State AA tournament. Play began Monday afternoon. The Simpson Lady Cougars defeated Riverfield 69-46. In later action, the Columbia girls beat the Silliman girls 61-39. Simpson plays Oak Forest and Columbia faces Trinity Episcopal on Wednesday.
In boys action at Gallman, Prentiss Christian eased by Riverfield 57-55, and Oak Forest up-ended Columbia 58-57. PCS plays Bowling Green, Oak Forest faces Trinity on Wednesday.
Copiah’s Lady Colonels, third place finishers in last week’s Dist. 4-AA tournament at Simpson, played Tuesday at 6:30 against the Bowling Green Lady Bucs. Results were not available by press time, but are on the internet at www.copiahmonitor.com. The winner will face Prairie View on Thursday.
Crystal Springs is hosting the Division 6-3A tournament that began Monday. The Lady Indians of Hazlehurst knocked off the Richland Lady Rangers 44-31. Kiara Shannon led HHS with 14 points. The Lady Indians face Raymond at 4 p.m. on Thursday.
Crystal Springs’ Lady Tigers faced Magee’s Lady Trojans at 7:00 on Tuesday evening. The winner plays Thursday at 7 p.m.
On the boys’ side, Hazlehurst whipped Magee 95-44. The Indians were led by Fred Fuller with 18 and Eric Walker followed with 17. Three other Indians scored in double digits in the rout. The Indians play Raymond Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
The Tigers of Crystal Springs played Richland at 8:30 on Tuesday. The winner will play Thursday at 8:30
Both Wesson teams are in the Dist. 6-2A tournament at Enterprise.
The Cobras, seed fifth, faced fourth-seeded St. Joseph’s on Monday. St. Joe etched out a 61-55 win, ending the Cobras season. Josh Hood led Wesson with 18. Jeromy Smith added 15 in the loss.
The Lady Cobras, regular season champ and seeded number one, will play St. Joseph on Thursday at 4:00 in the semi-finals. St. Joe knocked off St. Andrews 64-61 on Monday night.
The winner of the 4 p.m. Thursday game will play in the title game Friday at 7 p.m.
