Stay safe while trick-or-treating

Hazlehurst Police Chief Byron Swilley reminds families to keep safety in mind during this weekend’s fun activities. He offers the following tips for trick-or-treaters:

When trick-or-treating, have children visit familiar homes in neighborhoods with well-lighted streets.

Only visit homes with their lights turned on outside or inside.

Young children should trick-or-treat with an adult.

Wear reflective clothing that is visible to motorists.

Use extreme caution while crossing streets.

Children should not enter a home to receive treats unless accompanied by an adult.

When dressing children in a mask that covers the face, make sure the child can breathe and see properly and easily.

Discuss with children the dangers of going anywhere with a stranger and encourage them to stay close to familiar adults at all times.

Report suspicious activity to the Hazlehurst Police Department immediately.  Business need not serve customers with masks, as well.

“We will be out in full force for trick-or-treating on Saturday,” Swilley said.
