A 25 mile trip to the east proved unkind to both Wesson varsity basketball teams last Monday. The Lady Cobras and Cobras both dropped contests to Mendenhall High School in the Lawrence County Tournament at Monticello.
The Lady Cobras battled close to the Lady Tigers, but still came up on the short end. Wesson trailed 11-9 at the end of the first quarter, and nearly kept pace with the Lady Tigers by halftime, trailing only 23-20. After outscoring MHS 15-14 in the third quarter, the Lady Cobras were poised to take the lead heading into the fourth down by 2 at 37-35.
The pivotal fourth quarter saw the Lady Tigers hit free throws with a late lead and knock off the Lady Cobras 55-48. Wesson fell to 3-2.
Seniors Shauntay Walker and Ann Shelby Davis led the Lady Cobras with 8 points each, followed by Danielle Tadlock with 5 and Macie Case with 4.
On the boys’ side, the Cobras are still hunting their first victory of the season after falling to 0-6 with the loss to Mendenhall.
Trailing 19-6 after one quarter, the Cobras rallied to close the gap to 24-17 at the half. The Tigers opened the lead wider after three and lead 46-34. A wild rally by Wesson in the fourth came up just short, however. The Cobras outscored the Tigers 21-13. The final was 59-55 in favor of Mendenhall.
Wesson was lead by senior Tyler Lumley’s 22 points. Gib Britt battled for 15. Jeromy Smith (6) and Hunter Hood (5) rounded out the scoring leaders.
The Cobras and Lady Cobras, along with Copiah Academy, will be participating in the Hillcrest Christian School tournament this week in south Jackson. Both Copiah teams were defeated by Hillcrest on Monday and will play on Saturday.
Wesson’s teams faced Columbia Academy on Tuesday evening. A win will place them in a Thursday evening contest with either Jackson Prep or Canton Academy. A loss will put them in the consolation bracket on Saturday.
Other teams participating are St. Andrews and St. Aloyisius.
Everyone is encouraged to support all local high school student-athletes by attending games and cheering on the teams, win or lose.
