The Copiah Academy Colonels find themselves back in familiar territory this week after defeating the Washington Generals 2 games to 1 in the AAA-D2 baseball state semi-finals on Friday.  The Colonels advanced to the AA final in 2009, coming up short against the Lee Colts.

Copiah won the first game in Greenville on Tuesday, 1-0.  The Generals rallied in game 2 on Friday to even the series at 1 apiece.  Then, the Colonels piled on the hits, home runs and runs to take game 3 on Friday evening.

Copiah will face the other semi-final winner this week in a best-of-three series.  CA will host Magnolia Heights on Tuesday at 5:30, then will travel to the school in Senatobia on Thursday for game 2 at 5:00 and, if necessary, a third game to begin 30 minutes after game 2.

The Colonels seemed to have this one in hand going into the final inning leading 8-4.  A comedy of Copiah errors and timely hitting rallied the Generals past the home team.

Copiah wasted a 4-for-5, two homerun, 4 RBI effort by junior second baseman Mitch Little in the loss.  Russ Singleton also homered.  Bryce Guess was 2-for-3.

Copiah used 4 pitchers in the contest.  Senior righty Ben Boone absorbed the loss, pitching the final inning-plus.

The rubber match of the series quickly became another slugfest for Copiah.  The Colonels totaled 5 home runs.

Singleton’s 2 home runs, including a grand slam, and 5 RBI’s led the Colonels.  Little homered again, finishing 2-for-3 with 3 RBI’s.  Colton Brown was 3-for-4 with a home run and 2 RBI.  Guess was also 3-for-4 with a homer, a double and 3 RBI.

Dustin McCrory started for Copiah and pitched over 3 innings.  He scattered 10 hits and gave up 8 runs, leaving with a lead in the middle of the third inning.  Boone finished the final 3+ innings, allowing only 3 its and 1 run. The two combined for a total of 7 strikeouts.
