The Wesson Cobras (7-5-1) traveled to Biloxi on Tuesday evening to take on the St. Patrick Fighting Irish in round one of the 1A/2A/3A state soccer playoffs. It was a good outing for the Cobras in their first playoff appearance, but they suffered a disappointing 2-0 loss.
St. Patrick scored two goals quickly, however, the stubborn Cobra defense held off the skilled Fighting Irish attack for the remainder of the game. Wesson junior, Jacob Tarver, had an exceptional game as goalie, blocking numerous shot attempts by the Irish.
Returning to play for the Cobras for the first time this season was junior forward, Austin Graham. Graham suffered a knee injury in the fall playing football but was released by his doctors on Monday to join his team. Other Cobra teammates seeing playoff action were seniors Gage Ashley, Aren Case, Emilio Collado, Tony DelCid, Warren Furches, and Walker Parrish; juniors Tony Bates, Alex Berry, Jace McCardle, Daniel Nasif, and Josh Smith; sophomores Steve DelCid, Jay Haynes, Brandon Nettles, and Ryan Spear; and freshman Luis Mellado. Fifth year coach, Ricky Gunter, also has a talented group of reserve players who are expected to contribute to the team next year.
