Cobras pick up key wins over Bruins

The Wesson Cobras (5-7) navigated a tough Region 6-2A foe last week in route to a series win over the St. Joseph Bruins.
“We should have swept the series but walks and errors did us in,” stated Wesson head coach Seth Lofton.  “We played well enough to get the series.”
Wesson 8, St. Joe 6
Senior Co-Lin signee Matt Smith picked up 10 strikeouts in route to an 8-6 win over the Bruins while fellow senior Gib Britt picked up the save for the Cobras to close out the game.
Britt led the Cobras with two hits including a two run homerun.  Outfielder Jacob Fischer had a double and two RBI’s while Matt Smith nailed a double as well.  Gage Wilson smashed a two RBI single in the win.
Wesson 5, St. Joe 2
Britt kept the Bruins off balance all evening recording eight strikeouts in route to a 5-2 victory.
First baseman Patrick Boone led the Cobras with two hits including a two run homerun for the Cobras.  Kyle Cross collected two hits including a triple for the Cobras.  Britt and Matt Smith had two hits each including a double each.
St. Joe 13, Wesson 10
Three Cobra pitchers issued ten walks and the Wesson defense made six errors in a 13-10 defeat to the Bruins of St. Joe.
Freshman Bailey Warren picked up the loss in relief of Gage Wilson on a night that saw the Cobras unable to find the strike zone or make the routine plays.
Offensively, Boone stayed hot going 3 for 3 with a double and an RBI.  Matt Smith smashed a two run homerun for the Cobras while his brother spanked a triple on the evening.
Magee  13, Wesson 3
The Cobras were dominated by the Trojans as the Cobras looked high and low for pitching after a grueling series with the Bruins of St, Joe.
Matt Smith and Hunter Hood led the Cobras with Smith grabbing three hits including a double and Hood slapping two doubles.  Britt and Cullen Greer singled for the Cobras.
Sophomore Josh Smith picked up the loss and was relieved by Paxton Cupit in the third inning.
Wesson 8, Florence 1
Britt had five strikeouts and gave up four hits in route to picking up the win over Florence in the Magee tournament.
Josh Smith led the Cobras with two hits including a double and two RBI.  Jacob Fischer had two singles in the contest while Matt Smith and Cross collected a single.
