Colonels sweep Oak Forest

By James Beasley

The Copiah Academy Colonels went 3-1 last week, sweeping 3 games from the Oak Forest Yellow Jackets before losing on Saturday to the Brookhaven Academy Cougars. CA’s record now stands at 14-8 heading into this week’s play.

On Tuesday, Copiah traveled to Oak Forest, where they edged the Jackets 5-3. CA senior righthander Trevor Blocker (5-2) picked up the win and helped his own cause with a pair of singles.  Mitch Little and Casey Hurley also had two hits each for the winners.

Two days later, the Colonels swept a doubleheader in Gallman, edging Oak Forest 3-2 in the first game and then stinging the Yellow Jackets 11-4 in the nightcap. In the opening game, Casey Hurley (4-2) was the winning pitcher and contributed a double and a homer. Hurley also got plenty of support from teammate Colton Brown, who had 3 of CA’s 8 hits.

In the second game, Copiah scored 10 runs in the first 3 innings and coasted to the easy victory. Southpaw Michael Bagley (3-0) picked up the victory and got plenty of offensive support from several teammates with multiple hits: Mitch Little, who had a double and home run; Colton Brown and Dennis Harper, who each had a single and double; and Trevor Blocker, who had a pair of singles. In addition, Casey Hurley had a home run for the Colonels.

The plan was for Copiah Academy fans to enjoy a crawfish boil before last Saturday’s game against Brookhaven Academy. But instead, it was the Cougars who enjoyed a feast as they roasted the Colonels 14-3 in Gallman. “We just got beat,” Copiah head coach Scooter Prince said in summing up the loss.

CA’s Ty Higginbotham absorbed the loss. The only bright spots for Copiah were from Mitch Little, who had a single and double, and Colton Brown, who delivered a pair of singles. In addition, Trevor Blocker had a double in a losing effort.
