Seminary knocks off Wesson

BY BRADLEY CROW
The Wesson Cobras battled throughout the entire second half with Seminary only to come up short in a dogfight 14-13 Friday night in Seminary.
“We had our chances,” stated Wesson head coach Tommy Clopton.  “If I would have known we were going to throw a shutout in the second half, we would have probably gone for two instead of kicking it.”
The extra point Clopton was referring to was a botched snap on an extra point that failed to send the Cobras to a 14-13 defeat.  The Cobras were led by Steven Jones who carried the ball 21 times for 152 yards and a touchdown on the evening.
Trailing 6-0, the Cobras went ahead 7-6 when Jones busted loose for a 63 yard TD run.  The Austin Graham PAT was good to put the Cobras ahead.
After trailing 14-7 at the half, the Cobras scored early in third quarter on a Jacob Fischer 1 yard TD score.  The failed extra point and tough defensive play the rest of the way doomed the Cobras in a defensive battle.
Offensively, Jacob Fischer had 9 rushes for 54 yards and was 5 of 14 passing for 52 yards and two interceptions on the night.
Defensively, the Cobras were led by Derrick Lyles who had 8 stops.  Tackle Cullen Greer had 7 tackles and a fumble recovery.  Peyton Cupit and Daniel Nasif had 6 stops each.
Wesson hosts West Marion for Homecoming this Friday night.  Kickoff is set for 7:30.
