Defense, turnovers give Hinds 36-0 win over Co-Lin

WESSON – The Hinds Eagles took advantage of seven Co-Lin turnovers to take a 36-0 shutout win over the Wolfpack in the opening week of division play. Co-Lin travels to Ellisville on Saturday to take on the Jones County Bobcats in their homecoming game. The Eagles swarming defense was too much for the Wolfpack. They intercepted Co-Lin freshman quarterback Chandler Rogers five times and sacked him resulting in a fumble recovery at Co-Lin’s 8-yard line.
Hinds (2-1, 1-0) scored on the first play of the second quarter on a 54-yard run by sophomore Jeremy Palmer. The Wolfpack blocked the Kyle Williams PAT. The Eagles clung to a slim 6-0 halftime lead.
Hinds broke the game open in the third quarter scoring 23 points. The Eagles took a 9-0 lead on a 28-yard field goal by Kyle Williams at the 11:58 mark.
After a 25-yard punt by Co-Lin punter Nolan Long gave Hinds possession at the Co-Lin 38, quarterback Deon Anthony threw a 23-yard touchdown strike to Quantavius Leslie. The Wolfpack blocked the extra point giving Hinds a 15-0 lead.
On their next series, Hinds moved 70 yards in 9 plays. Running back Roy Williams Jr. found a hole up the middle scoring from 37-yards out with 1:44 left in the third quarter. Williams hit the PAT to put Hinds up 22-0.
After Rogers was sacked and fumbled at Co-Lin’s 8-yard line, Hinds scored on third down as Anthony outran the Co-Lin’s defense, making it 29-0 on the last play of the third quarter.
Anthony completed 11 of 23 passes for 147 yards and was intercepted once by Co-Lin’s Dehendret Collins.
Hinds defensive back Adonis Armstrong intercepted his second pass of the game and returned it 74 yards for the touchdown to give the Eagles a 36-0 lead with 13:31 left in the game.
Rogers broke a 46-yard run early to the Hinds 34 early in the first quarter but the Eagles regrouped. For the game, Rogers completed 14 of 30 passes for 141 yards and 5 interceptions. He rushed 9 times for 54 yards and was tackled 4 times behind the line of scrimmage.
Freshman Darren Anderson led Co-Lin’s receivers with 6 catches for 71 yards.
Co-Lin finished with 37 rushes for 177 yards. Joel Davis rushed 20 times for 57 yards. Danny Hobbs had 5 carries for 48 yards, but left the game in the second quarter after a helmet-to-helmet collision.
Leading the Wolfpack on defense was Derrick Billups with 10 tackles and a blocked extra point. Raymond Williams had 9 stops and sophomore Tevin Thomas had 8.
