Lady Colonels win 5 of 6, prepare for playoffs

The Copiah Academy Lady Colonels won 5 of 6 games last week to improve their season record to 29-4. CA is scheduled to play in the MAIS South State Playoffs at Jackson Prep this Saturday and next Monday. Opponents had not been determined at press time.
In their first game last week, the Lady Colonels edged Parklane Academy 2-0 as Meghan Johnson (12-2) blanked the Lady Pioneers on 4 hits in Gallman. She also drove in an insurance run in the sixth inning with a pop-up in foul territory that allowed the CA runner to tag up when home plate was left uncovered. Victoria Allen had driven in the first run with an RBI-double in the third. Kamryn Vanlandingham and Lindsey Walker each had a pair of hits for the winners.
On Tuesday of last week, Copiah journeyed to Starkville, where Kaitlyn Taylor (8-1) tossed a 3-hit shutout to lead the Lady Colonels to a 4-0 win over the Lady Volunteers. She also contributed an RBI-double in the top of the fourth inning. Meanwhile, teammate Lindsey Walker also had an RBI-double in the seventh. Other offensive stars included Meghan Johnson with a double, and Morgan Brown with a pair of singles.
In the first game of the Jackson Prep Invitational Tournament last Saturday, the Copiah Academy Lady Colonels nipped Canton Academy 4-3 in four innings as Kaitlyn Taylor improved to 9-1. Kelli Berry blasted a 2-run home run in the bottom of the second, while teammate Kamryn Vanlandingham had an RBI-double in the third. In addition, Lindsey Walker doubled in the fourth.
CA scored all 4 runs in the bottom of the fourth to edge the Carroll Academy Lady Rebels 4-2 at the Jackson Prep Tourney last Saturday. Meghan Johnson (13-2) was the winning pitcher and helped her own cause with an RBI-single. Another run scored on Kaitlyn Taylor’s sacrifice fly, and 2 more came home on Kelli Berry’s double. Kamryn Vanlandingham also had a double for the winners.
Copiah scored in every inning as the Lady Colonels beat the Oak Forest Lady Jackets 6-2 at the Prep Tournament. Jordan Jones (6-0) went the distance to pick up the victory and received offensive support from Kaitlyn Taylor, who had 2 hits for the winners. Teammate Morgan Brown drove in a pair of runs with a first-inning single, while Victoria Allen had a 2-run double in the bottom of the third. Carleigh Roberts also drove in a run on a fielder’s choice in the third.
The Parklane Lady Pioneers avenged a loss earlier in the week as they beat Copiah 6-3 last Saturday in the semifinals of the Jackson Prep Tournament. Kaitlyn Taylor (9-2) was tagged with the loss despite blasting a 2-run homer in the top of the sixth. Morgan Brown had 3 hits in a losing effort, including an RBI-single in the fifth. Teammate Kelli Berry contributed 2 hits, including a sixth-inning double.
