Colonels win 2, lose 1 in first week of basketball

    The Copiah Academy boys basketball season got off to a good start as the Colonels beat Oak Forest and Manchester Academy on the road sandwiched around a home loss to Leake Academy. CA is now 2-1 after the first two weeks of play.
    At Oak Forest, Copiah jumped out to a 23-10 first-quarter lead and never looked back, stinging the Yellowjackets 64-40. The Colonels led 35-22 at halftime and outscored Oak Forest 29-18 in the second half to secure the victory.
    Josh Cook led the winners with 13 points, followed by Trey Moss and Bryce Berry with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Other CA totals included Michael Bagley with 7 points, Jake Pino and Dillon Martin with 6 points each, Ty Quick with 5 points and 12 rebounds, and Barron Miller and Brandon Baker with 2 points apiece. Devin Cook led the Jackets with 16 points.
    The Colonels lost their home opener as the Leake Academy Rebels outscored Copiah 24-8 in the pivotal second quarter enroute to a 63-40 win in Gallman. Leake increased its lead to 51-35 after three quarters and was never threatened even though being outscored in the final period.
    Trey Moss led CA with 16 points. Other Copiah totals included Dillon Martin with 7 points, Ty Quick with 6 points, Justin Morris with 5 points, Michael Bagley with 4 points, Brandon Baker with 3 points, and a host of players with 2 points each: Brandon Miller, Bryce Berry, Grey Williams, and Clayton Williams.
    Copiah closed out its week with a 64-49 win over Manchester Academy in Yazoo City last Friday night. The Colonels outscored the Mavericks in each quarter and had four players in double figures: Ty Quick with 15 points, Trey Moss with 13 points, Bryce Berry with 12 points, and Grey Williams with 10 points. Other CA totals included Brandon Miller and Michael Bagley with 6 points each, and Dillon Martin with 2 points.
Meanwhile, Austin Stovall led Manchester with 12 points.

Girls’ Action
    The Copiah Academy Lady Colonels trailed Oak Forest 29-18 at halftime in their season opener, but couldn’t make up the difference as they were beaten 47-40 by the Lady Jackets in Clinton, Louisiana.
    Carleigh Roberts led CA with 20 points in a losing effort. Other Copiah scorers included Kacie Berry with 9 points, Taylor Wilson with 7 points, and Mary Landrum Pyron with 4 points. Lindsey Neal led Oak Forest with 16 points.
    The Lady Colonels ran into a buzz saw in their first home game of the season as perennial powerhouse Leake Academy blasted Copiah 72-27. The Rebelettes jumped out to a 30-4 lead after one quarter and never looked back. Carleigh Roberts led CA with 12 points. Other Copiah scorers were Taylor Wilson with 8 points, Sarah Claire Armstrong with 4 points, and Mary Landrum Pyron with one point. Leake was led by Hannah Peeples with 17 points.
    Copiah ended last week on a sour note as the Manchester Lady Mavericks whipped the Lady Colonels 48-34 in Yazoo City. The teams played nip-and-tuck in the first half, which ended with Manchester nursing a 19-17 lead. But the Lady Mavericks pulled away in the second half, outscoring CA 29-18.
    Carleigh Roberts led Copiah with 13 points. Other Lady Colonels in the scoring column included Mary Landrum Pyron with 7 points, Sarah Claire Armstrong with 6 points, Taylor Wilson with 5 points, Kacie Berry with 2 points, and Kaitlyn Taylor with one point. Maggie Hughes and Kristen Morris led the winners with 18 points each.
