After dropping a pair of games to MRA earlier in the week, Copiah Academy rebounded with an 8-4 win last Saturday at Canton Academy. The victory left the Colonels with a 1-2 record after their first week of play. Meanwhile, the JV team won 2 of 3, sweeping a pair from MRA before falling to Canton.
In the first varsity game of the season, MRA nipped CA 3-2 in Gallman despite being outhit by the Colonels 7 to 5. Latham Pyron led the Copiah attack with a single and double.
CA got one run in the second as Asa Newman walked with 2 out, moved up on Clayton Williams’ single, and scored on Mason Ferrell’s RBI-single.
The Colonels scored another run in the third when Jacob Ashley reached on an error, moved up on Doug Strait’s single, and scored as Michael Bagley grounded into a fielder’s choice.
Bagley (0-1), who went 4 2/3 innings and struck out 9, was tagged with the loss. Peyton Whitehead came on in relief and recorded 4 strikeouts.
Copiah traveled to MRA on Thursday, where the Colonels had a much tougher time against the Patriots, losing 10-0. Peyton Whitehead (0-1) absorbed the loss, despite helping his own cause with a pair of singles. The only other CA hits came in the fifth inning on back-to-back singles by Clayton Williams and Asa Newman.
On Saturday, the Colonels put it all together as they whipped Canton Academy 8-4 in Canton. Zach Mattingly led the way offensively with a pair of RBI’s and 3 hits, including a double. Jacob Ashley and Michael Bagley also had RBI’s for the winners.
Asa Newman was the starting pitcher for Copiah, while Grant Anderson (1-0) came on in relief and picked up the win.
“Our pitching held up well,” CA head coach Joey Hydrick said afterwards. “We had no walks and made the plays we had to.”
