Shortstop Willie Ervin flips to second for an out against Terry.

New Hazlehurst head baseball coach Trey Lindsey has worked feverishly to get his team ready for the 2012 season.  Lindsey, who replaced departed coach Vince Granberry, is attempting to rebuild after the Indians appeared in the first round of the 3A playoffs in 2011 and finished with a 17-11 record.
He is finding the hill a little higher to climb after three games–all losses by double digits–to open the season.
MORTON 11, HAZLEHURST 1, Monday, February 27
The Indians’ lone run came when Arick Grayer knocked in DaVonte McKenzie in the second inning to cut the score to 4-1.  Morton added 3 runs in the bottom of the second,  and 2 in each of the next two innings.  Morton then held the Indians scoreless in the top of the fifth to close out the 10-run rule win.
Grayer finished 2-for-2 at the plate.  The only other hit managed by the Indians came from D. McKenzie.
Kurt Collins, 0-1, lasted 2 innings on the mound for the Indians.  He allowed just 7 hits, but was hurt by 6 Indian errors.  Collins struck out 3 and gave up 9 runs, 5 of which were earned.  He was relieved by Jervarus Banks in the third.

WARREN CENTRAL 17, HAZLEHURST 5 (Terry Classic, Saturday, February 25)
Collins led Hazlehurst at the plate scoring 3 three runs.  Willie Ervin was 1-for-2 and knocked in another run.
Nick Smith was the starter and took the loss for the Indians on the mound.

TERRY 15, HAZLEHURST 0 (Terry Classic, Saturday, February 25)
The Indian defense again had trouble handling the baseball and committed 5 errors.  Grayer, 0-1, took the loss giving up all 15 runs on 15 hits.  At the plate, Ervin doubles and Xavion Thedford singled.

A LOOK AHEAD
The Indians have a nice little road trip planned over the next few days.  After participating in the South Pike Tournament on Friday against McComb at 4 p.m. and South Pike at 6 p.m., the team will head north.  The Indians will play in the St. Andrews tournament on Saturday beginning with Bayside Academy at 10:30 and followed by a game with St. Aloyisius at 3:30.
