Lady Colonels win 2, but rain cancels weekend tourney

By James Beasley

The Copiah Academy Lady Colonels won both of their games last week even though rain forced the cancellation of most of the Starkville Academy Tournament on Saturday. Earlier in the week, CA edged Jackson Prep 4-2 in Flowood. On Tuesday, Copiah overcame 5 errors in their victory over the Lady Patriots. Kaitlyn Taylor (8-0) got the win and helped her own cause with a pair of singles, while teammate Jordan Jones picked up the save. Kaitlin Cooksey drove in 2 runs for the winners, one on an RBI-single in the top of the first and the other on a fielder’s choice in the fifth. In addition, Kelli Berry had a double and Jordan Jones an RBI-single in the second. Unfortunately, CA’s Kelly Byrd broke the little finger on her throwing hand and will be sidelined for 4 weeks.
The Lady Colonels traveled to Starkville Academy on Saturday and blanked Canton Academy 8-0 in 3 innings before heavy rain forced the cancellation of the rest of the tournament. Jordan Jones (6-0) pitched a one-hitter and helped her own cause with a pair of hits. Kamryn Vanlandingham had a double and single for the winners, while teammate Kaitlin Cooksey contributed a couple of singles. The hitting star was Lindsey Walker with 3 RBI’s, two of them coming on a first-inning double.
The Lady Colonels are now 15-1 and traveled to Hattiesburg earlier this week, where they played Presbyterian Christian School at William Carey University. This Saturday, they’ll head south to McComb, where they’ll participate in the Parklane Academy Tournament.
