FINAL WEEK OF FOOTBALL: What’s at stake

Whoever said football season lasts too long around here has never caught football fever that invades the area at the start of fall practice in late summer.  Nonetheless, tonight is the final night of regular season high school football in Copiah County, believe it or not.  And, seniors that participate in football, band, cheer and dance team will be honored in pre-game ceremonies at Copiah Academy, Wesson and Hazlehurst.
One contest tonight has post-season seeding implications.  And, that’s at Stone Stadium in Wesson, where the Wesson Cobras are hosting Puckett in a seeding game for the south 2A playoffs.
The Cobras, who are in second place in Region 6-2A, can stay in that spot with a win.  Wesson (7-2, 3-1) has only one loss-to region champ St. Joe last week-while Puckett (2-6, 2-2) has two and is third place tied with Amite County (2-6, 2-2).  If Puckett wins, Wesson will drop to third and Puckett will move up to second, if Amite County loses to Loyd Star(1-7, 1-3) tonight. If ACHS wins (which it will likely do) and Puckett wins, ACHS will be the second seed by virtue of their win over Puckett earlier in the season, Wesson will be the third seed and Puckett will be the fourth seed.
Our prediction: Wesson defeats Puckett and ACHS defeats Loyd Star.
In Hazlehurst, the Indians (10-0, 4-0) have wrapped up the top seed in Region 7-3A and are hosting Crystal Springs (4-6, 0-4).  The Tigers can only play spoiler to the Indians undefeated record with a win, as CS is out of the 3A playoff picture all together.  As for the rest of Region 7-3A, Jefferson County (5-5, 3-1) can wrap up the 2-seed with a win over Franklin County (6-4, 2-2) tonight.  Third-place Wilkinson County (7-2, 2-2) will likely remain the third seed as they play Prentiss (2-8, 1-3) tonight.
Our prediction: Hazlehurst rolls CS; Wilkinson demolishes Prentiss; and, Jefferson County edges Franklin County.
Copiah Academy(1-9, 1-4) hosts East Rankin (6-4, 2-3) in a game that has a post-season berth on the line for the Colonels, and a top-seed at stake for the Patriots. If Copiah wins, the Colonels will be the second seed out of MSAIS South AAA-Div. 2 and Starkville Academy would move into the top spot.  The Volunteers (5-5, 2-3) face Presbyterian Christian tonight.
Our prediction: East Rankin escapes a fired-up Copiah; Presbyterian takes care of Starkville.  In other MAIS AAA south contests, Jackson Prep (10-0) will knock off Parklane (8-2).
