Wesson Lady Cobras drop two out of three games in Dexter Christmas Tourney

By Corey McKinney

The Wesson Lady Cobras have struggled this year, but showed some real improvement throughout the Dexter Christmas tournament. Wesson started tourney play on a good note on Thursday against the Sacred Heart Lady Crusaders, and won by 38 points, 53-15. Points from Wesson came from a variety of Lady Cobra, as everyone saw playing time. Xzaviah James had 13 points, Brandi McInnis and Hannah McCormick had 7 each, Azaria Smith and Corianna Young both had 6 points, Taylor Smith had 5 points, Gabby Thomas had 3 points and Olivia Allen and Kayla Britt had 2 points each.

The Lady Cobras moved on to the second round of the tourney and faced off with the South Pike Lady Eagles that Friday night. Although the Lady Cobras played well, they lost 60-48. Azaria Smith led Wesson with 15 points and 4 steals, Hannah McCormick had 13 points, Corianna Young had 8 points, Brandi McInnis had 7 points, and Xzaviah James had 5 points and 8 rebounds. Coach Rusti Magee, after the game, said, “South Pike is a very athletic team. We played well in the first, second, and fourth quarters, and we never quit. We just could not score in the third quarter.”

The Lady Cobras played in the consolation on Saturday against West Marion Lady Trojans. Wesson was playing great up until the fourth quarter, when they only scored 4 points. The final score was 57-40 in favor of the Lady Trojans. Hannah McCormick had a great game with 10 points and 5 boards. Kayla Britt and Xzaviah James both had 9 points each. Britt also had 6 steals. Brandi McInnis scored 7 points. Corianna Young had 3 points and Jashia smith had 2 points.

“We started the fourth quarter up two points,” Coach Magee said, “and went in scoring drought. The scored is no indication to how tight the game really was. We had to foul and try to play catch up during the fourth quarter. Having 31 turnovers didn’t help either.”

The team stands at 8-9 after the first half of the season.  The Lady Cobras are improving every game and are looking forward to district play coming up. The next game is at Bogue Chitto on January 4.
