Gonzales, Lady Wolves earn split with Pearl River
WESSON – Co-Lin’s Brooke Gonzales pitched a one-hit shutout to lead the Co-Lin Lady Wolves to a 1-0 South Division win over the Pearl River Lady Wildcats in game one of a double header. The Lady Wildcats rallied to take a 14-3 win in the nightcap. Co-Lin (14-8-1, 1-5) will make the short trip to Summit on Tuesday to take on rival Southwest Mississippi for a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.

In a classic pitcher’s duel, the game remained scoreless until the fifth inning. Co-Lin’s Hannah Roberts was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Jaylee Fernandez beat out a bunt. Josie Porter’s RBI double down the right field line scored Roberts with the game’s only run.
Pearl River couldn’t get anything going against Gonzales. Brittany Leblanc’s single to left field in the sixth inning was the Lady Wildcats only hit. Gonzales, who improved to 8-3, struck out seven during and walked none her seven innings of work.
“Brooke had an outstanding gam,” said Lady Wolves Head Coach Allen Kent. “All of her pitches were working and she stayed ahead in the count. She’s been giving us a chance to win each time she’s in the circle. She really had it going today, it was fun to watch. We had a few other chances to score, but were glad to pick up the win. Both pitchers were on top of their game.”
At the plate for the Lady Wolves, Missy Romero doubled and singled. Adding support were Kaitlin Moak and Kayla Craft.
Pearl River 14, Co-Lin 3
Pearl River scored two runs in the first inning. The Lady Wolves responded as Josie Porter singled and scored on Kayla Craft’s single. In the second, the visitors added two more runs to take a 4-1 lead.
The Lady Wildcats exploded for seven unearned runs third inning to increase their lead 11-1.
“It (the third inning) was a train wreck,” said Kent. “Everything that could go wrong, did go wrong. It was the worst inning we’ve had in my 11 years as coach.”
Meghan Johnson was relieved by Missy Romero, who finished the game. Kacie Berry’s 2-un homerun in the fourth rounded out the scoring for Co-Lin in the 14-3 loss. Johnson (4-4) gave up three earned runs on six hits, struck out none and hit one batter.
Romero went 2.3 innings, allowing seven runs (three earned) on six hits.
“We are a much better team than we showed the second game.,” said Kent. “Pearl River is a very good team, they took advantage of all of our mistakes.”
