Cobras win Region 7-2A title

Winning their first outright region title since 2010, the Wesson Cobras (17-4) knocked off Loyd Star on Friday night 3-2 and finished the Region 7-2A race on top at 11-1.
Loyd Star had halted the Cobras’ 10-game region win streak on Tuesday, claiming a 2-1 win in Lincoln County.  With both teams at 10-1, Friday’s game was for ‘all the marbles’– a region crown and top seeding in the south 2A post-season tournament.

The Cobras plated 2 in the bottom of the first an scored one in the bottom of the third.  That 3-0 lead held up until Loyd Star scored 2 in the fifth.
Neither team scored the rest of the way, and Wesson held on to the 3-2  margin to win.
Alex Smith, 7-1, threw a one-hitter and shut down Hornet bats for the entire 7 innings.  He struck out 5 and scattered 8 walks.
Kaleb Skinner had the only two hits for Wesson. His double scored Jase Alexander in the first.  Skinner also scored the deciding run in the third inning after hitting safely.
Both teams committed two errors.

On Tuesday at Loyd Star, Bailey Warren gave up only two hits to the Hornets in Wesson’s 2-1 loss.
After scoring 1 in the top of the first, the Cobras were blanked the rest of the way.  Loyd Star plated one the fourth and one more in the bottom of the sixth to seal the win.
Cullen Greer knocked in Alex Smith for Wesson’s only run.  Greer was 1-for-3, along with Warren.  Smith was the only other hitter for Wesson, finishing 1-for-4.
Wesson faced off against Lawrence County on Tuesday and won when Taylor Roberts homered in the bottom the ninth, 9-8.  They’ll play at West Lincoln on Thursday (7 p.m.), at Brookhaven on Saturday (1 p.m.) and will host Hazlehurst on Monday (7 p. m.).
The Cobras will host the first round of South 2As on May 2-4.
