The Copiah Academy baseball team did some good things in their games at East Rankin Academy last Thursday, but there weren’t enough of them as the Patriots swept a doubleheader from the Colonels by scores of 4-2 and 16-8, respectively.
In the first game, CA outhit ERA 6-5 despite losing. The Patriots took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second on Perry Harris’ RBI-single. The Colonels tied the score with a run in the top of the fourth, only to have East Rankin respond with a pair of runs in the fifth on David Watkins’ RBI-double and a CA error. Copiah threatened with a run in the seventh on Jacob Ashley’s RBI-double, but Jacob Weldon recorded the final out to halt the Colonel rally.
Josh Cook with a pair of singles was the only CA player with multiple hits in the first game. Zane Frazier was the offensive star for the Colonels in the nightcap, going 4-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
The second game turned into a slugfest early as the Patriots scored 7 runs in the bottom of the first. The Colonels got 4 of them back in the top of the second, thanks to a sacrifice fly by Jacob Ashley, an RBI-double by Ryan Drew, and a 2-run single by Zane Frazier. However, ERA responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning.
CA never gave up, scoring once in the third on an RBI-double by Ashley and adding 2 more runs in the fourth on Josh Cook’s RBI-double and Zach Mattingly’s fielder’s choice. However, the Patriots responded each time, scoring a pair of runs in the third and another in the fourth. They put the game away with 4 runs in the bottom of the sixth, even though CA scored a final run in the seventh.
Copiah hosted AAA foe Jackson Prep on Tuesday and will travel to Flowood on Thursday for a double header with the Patriots.
