Mississippi Damage Prevention Council today announced it will host the 811 Run, an 8.11-kilometer (approximately 5 miles) run/walk at Atmos Energy in Flowood on Saturday, August 10, to remind all Mississippi residents and contractors to always call 811 before digging, regardless of the size of the project.
Mississippi residents who plan to dig, whether it’s for a simple project such as planting a garden or a larger construction project, are required by law to make a free call to 811 at least 2 Working days before digging to notify the underground utility owners that are members of Mississippi 811, Inc. of their intent to dig.
Professional utility line locators will then visit the dig site to mark the approximate location of underground utility lines with paint or flags.
The 811 Run serves as a public awareness event to help spread the safe digging message. Homeowners often make risky assumptions about whether or not they should get their utility lines marked, but every digging job requires a call to 811. Knowing where underground utility lines are buried before digging helps homeowners protect themselves from injury and prevents damages to utilities, service disruptions, and expensive repair costs.
The goal of our 811 Run is gathering community members together for a fun event to make sure everyone understands that safe digging is just one free phone call away. Whether you are a homeowner or a professional, the 811 Run reinforces the importance of knowing what’s below by always making the free call to 811 before digging. Doing so helps keep our community safe.
All profits from the race will go to Mississippi Damage Prevention council A Non-Profit Organization helping make Mississippi a Safer Place to live and Work.
The cost to participate is $25, this can be paid in advance or on the day of the race. For more information about the 811 Run, please Contact Miriam Grammar @ 601-982-7531 or office@ ms811.org
