Forgive Ol’ Gus for taking last week off. I was able to get outta town and go ‘gator huntin’ on the Mississippi and didn’t make it back to my typewriter in time for last week’s early deadline.
The ‘gator hunt was fun. The animals don’t scare me near as much as the infestation of ‘skeeters along ‘Ol Man River! They could tote a man off and drain him dry if you don’t watch out!
Anyway, back to football. I see my Indians have started 3-0 and are now 19-0 since 2011. That ride up to the Fork musta been long because Hazlehurst got off to a slow start in their 26-6 win.
The Colonels put a good whoopin’ on the Cougars from the Byram area. I’m a hopin’ that 36-6 thumpin’ will be the momentum builder that Copiah needs heading into the stretch.
The Cobras from Wesson, as hard as they play, just can’t buy a win right now. Their schedule is proving to be tougher than they’d imagined. After losing to West Lauderdale last Friday, they’re now 0-3.
Same goes for the Tigers in Crystal Springs–lots of talent, good coaches, just can’t seem to finish a game. Their 35-21 loss to Lawrence County could’ve gone the other way if the Tigers make a couple of more plays.
And, my Wolfpack from Co-Lin is off to a good start after whoopin’ Northeast and Northwest to start 2-0. East Central better watch out on Thursday night!
On the college scene, Ole Miss caught a break this week with Texas. Seems the Longhorns got very upset with defensive coordinator Manny Diaz–formerly of MSU–and fired his tail after BYU scorched the ‘Horns for 550 rushing yards in a 41-20 win over the weekend. The Rebels, 2-0 after disposing of SEMSU last weekend, are rolling into Austin peaking, while the ‘Horns are reeling.
As expected, Alcorn State enjoyed cashing their big check from Miss. State, who dismantled the Braves 51-7 and even their record to 1-1. The Bulldogs face a fierce buncha Tigers in Auburn this weekend to open SEC play, though.
Southern Miss is still huntin’ their first win since 2011. Nebraska beat up the Nasty Bunch pretty badly in Lincoln over the weekend. Now, USM travels to War Memorial in Little Rock, where teams from Mississippi go to die, this Saturday.
This week’s picks:
Wesson over Seminary 21-6
Silliman over Copiah 33-23
Hazlehurst over East Marion 29-16
Crystal Springs over Raymond 32-9
Co-Lin over East Central 21-6
Ole Miss over Texas 39-34
Auburn over Miss. State 35-34
Arkansas over USM 37-14
Alcorn State over Miss. Valley State 23-16
Jackson State over Tennessee State 15-6.
I’ll see you at a game somewhere on Friday night. Holler if you see me!
