Shaw appointed to State Board of Nursing

Wesson Mayor Alton Shaw was recently appointed by Governor Phil Bryant to serve on the Mississippi Board of Nursing. Shaw is one of seven registered nurses to sit on the Board along with four licensed practical nurses and one physician. The Board is charged with enforcement of the laws and rules regulating all levels of nursing practice, as well as establishing the requirements individuals must meet to obtain a license to practice nursing in Mississippi. In addition, the Board also approves nursing education programs, oversees the examination requirements of nurses and has the power to enforce penalties when a licensee violates the law.

Along with serving as Mayor of Wesson, Shaw also works as a Registered Nurse in the emergency room at Hardy Wilson Hospital in Hazlehurst.  He holds multiple special certifications and endorsements, and has served as adjunct faculty teaching pre-hospital emergency medicine at three separate colleges.  Shaw received his Associate Degree in Nursing from Copiah-Lincoln Community College, and then completed his Bachelor of Science in Nursing at the University of Southern Mississippi.  He also holds a degree in Paramedicine from the University of Mississippi Medical Center, along with two other Associate Degrees.

Shaw stated, “It is both an honor and a privilege that the Governor has chosen to entrust me with this responsibility.  I look forward to serving and helping to ensure that healthcare in Mississippi continues moving forward.”
