Mr. Kenneth Jolly has directed the band at Copiah Academy for the past 23 years. This past Saturday he presented members in the final concert of the year. “The median age of this group is approximately 14.5 years, but they have surpassed performances of former years—and I’ve had some good ones along the way,” Jolly stated. The band rated Superior in both MAIS Marching and Concert Contest. “This year we’ve moved up to Grade 4 music, and they have met the challenge.”
The fifth and sixth grade bands foretold that the success would continue, as they performed appropriate selections prior to the main concert. Selections for the high school band (grades 7-12) included the following: “Be Thou My Vision,” arr. Larry Clark; “Drums of the Sa-amis,” by Samuel R Hazo, “March Jubiloso,” by Darren Jenkins; “Pulse,” by Randall Standridge; and “Stars and Stripes Forever,” by John Philip Sousa. Each piece showcased the group’s competence in attacking different and complex genres of music with excellent results.
