Fake cash making rounds

By Anna W. Coates

Police Chief Byron Swilley cautioned citizens to be on the lookout for counterfeit bills, usually twenties or hundred dollar bills.  “Perpetrators can have all the equipment right at home they need to manufacture fake money,” he stated.  “Usually each bill will have the same serial number.  The bills are really hard to detect.”  Local merchants have been alerted.

Chief Swilley reminded that the city street department picks up household items that the garbage collectors can’t collect, such as paint cans, discarded furniture and the like. The crew makes its rounds through the city weekly.

Swilley also requested citizens to call the Police Station if they notice a street light is out.  “We notify Entergy, and it is helpful to have the number from the pole itself if you can get it.  Otherwise the location of the pole will suffice.”

“We are also on the lookout for semi-trucks parked in residential neighborhoods, “Chief Swilley stated. “Please call if this is occurring in your neighborhood.  We have an ordinance that forbids this practice.”

“The annual Public Safety Day will take place this Saturday, July 25, in front of Hazlehurst High School,” Chief Swilley announced.  Police and Fireman welcome kids and youth of the community for a day of fun and food as the opening of school draws near.  “There will be jumps, slides, and other entertainment from 10:00 AM until 1 PM. “We’re cooking hamburgers and hotdogs,” the Chief stated.  “We invite all the kids to come out for a good time and spend some time with those who keep the community safe.”

The next Chat with the Chief will be at the Police Station on East Whitworth Street on August 20, 5:30 PM.
