Three from area in football playoffs

THEY WON THEM ALL – The Hazlehurst Indian football team defeated Port Gibson 38-6 on Friday night, securing their first undefeated regular season (10-0, 5-0) since the 2012 state championship team went 16-0. The Region 7-3A champs will host the Crystal Springs Tigers on Friday night in the opening round of the 3A state playoffs. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. at Robert McDaniel Stadium. (Crockett Action Shots)

The regular season in football came to a close last Friday night.  And, when it was all said and done, teams from Copiah Academy, Crystal Springs and Hazlehurst were still standing–alive at least one more week.

Copiah (6-4) was defeated by Presbyterian Christian 55-28 and will play at Parklane in McComb on Friday night at 7 o’clock.  The Colonels are appearing in the playoffs for the first time in six seasons.
The Pioneers (5-6) defeated the Colonels 43-28 in McComb on October 16.  The winner will face Madison-Ridgeland Academy on November 13.  The Patriots drew a bye in the first round as the two-seed.

The Crystal Springs Tigers (2-9, Region 6-3A fourth) lost to St. Andrews on Friday, but still backed in to the playoffs after Morton High School was disqualified for playing an ineligible player.  The reward:  a trip to undefeated Hazlehurst.

The Indians rolled through Region 7-3A and the non-conference slate with a record of 10-0 and claim the one-seed out of the region.  Hazlehurst defeated Port Gibson on Friday night 36-8.  The Indians feature one of the stingiest defenses in the state, allowing just 13.2 points per game.
The Tigers and Indians kickoff at 7 p.m on Thursday.
