Hazlehurst police investigating stabbing that killed a man

A Hazlehurst man is dead after being stabbed this morning.

Assistant Police Chief Darian Murray said this afternoon that the victim, Richard Warren Smith, of Hazlehurst, passed away this afternoon at University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson as a result of injuries received during an alleged altercation that occurred at 103 Lewis Tillman Drive this morning.

“We received a call around 7:45 from the address that a person had been stabbed,” Murray said. “When we arrived, the person who allegedly stabbed Mr. Smith and another witness were at the location.  The witnesses said that the victim’s mother, Patty Smith, arrived at the residence with Lisa Brown to check on Mr. Smith.  An altercation erupted, and Smith was wounded,” he explained.

No charges have been filed pending further investigation, Murray explained, and all information collected will be presented to an upcoming grand jury.
