George Ellis Shannon

George Ellis Shannon, 71, passed away May 15, 2021. A funeral service was held May 22 at Greater New Zion M.B. Church, with Dr. Willie J. Jones officiating. Hazlehurst Funeral Home handled arrangements.
George was born Nov. 1, 1949, to J.C. Shannon and Candis Stubb Shannon. He was a Vietnam veteran, serving in the Navy, and was the recipient of a Purple Heart.
Preceding him in death were his parents.
Survivors include a daughter, Candis Cross, of Fairview Heights, Ill.; son, George Shannon Jr., of Cahokia, Ill.; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; brothers, Willie Shannon, of Kansas City, Kan.; Thomas Shannon, of East St. Louis, Ill.; and sisters, Mattie Shannon, of New Orleans, La.; Barbra Shannon Reese, and Sallie Shannon Stapleton, both of Hazlehurst.
