Thomas Shelton Jones

Thomas Shelton Jones, 75, went home to be with his Lord on July 16, 2024. A memorial service was held July 18 at First Presbyterian Church. Stringer Family Funeral Services in Hazlehurst handled arrangements.

Tommy was born in Woodville on Jan. 22, 1949. He was the only son of the late Bill Jones and the late Jean Smith. Tommy was raised by his father and stepmother (the late Alice Channel) and his mother and stepfather (John Kruse of Nebraska).

Tommy lived most of his life in South Mississippi, graduating from Hazlehurst High School in 1967. He then attended and graduated from Ole Miss in 1971.

While later working in Dallas, Texas, he met Janie Jobe from Tupelo. They were married in Tupelo on June 16, 1973. Tommy and Janie soon returned to Hazlehurst to join in business with his father and to raise their family.

Tommy was a passionate elder of the First Presbyterian Church in Hazlehurst and made service to his church an absolute daily part of his life. Tommy loved God and his wife of 51 years so very much. He valued greatly the time he spent with his precious family and many dear friends. He was richly blessed by his eight grandchildren.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, Janie, include two sons, Wes (Lauren) and Ben (Laura), of Oxford; one daughter, Mary Shelton Gamblin (Jeff), of Madison; eight grandchildren, Will and Maggie Jones, Gloria and Mary Jane Jones, and Ridge, Parker, Ben, and Eli Gamblin; his stepfather, John Kruse, of Walthill, Neb.; and one sister, Arie Katherine “Sissy” Jones Radecchi, of Hendersonville, N.C.
