JW Powell

JW Powell, 84, of Georgetown, passed away on Dec. 17, 2025, at his residence.  Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 19, and 10 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 20, at Georgetown Baptist Church.  The service will be held at 11 on Saturday at Georgetown Baptist Church, with burial at Georgetown Cemetery.  Stringer Family Funeral Home in Hazlehurst is handling arrangements.

Mr. Powell was born on Aug. 28, 1941, to the late Julius Powell and Ella Rea Errington Powell.  He was an all-star athlete and received a football scholarship to Mississippi State University.  He worked for Yellow Freight for many years.

Mr. Powell was very committed to his church and community, where he formerly served as alderman.  He was a longtime member and deacon at Georgetown Baptist Church, and he was a member of the Georgetown Volunteer Fire Department for over 30 years.

He is survived by his daughters, Julie Stephens (Daniel Lee) and Amy Lynn Morris (Tim); nine grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren; and brothers, Jim Powell (Ann), and Luther Lynn Powell (Amenda).
