W. H. “Shag” Pyron, 79, of Hazlehurst, died Sunday, March 22, 2009, in Hazlehurst.
Visitation is Monday at Stringer Funeral Home in Hazlehurst from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.
Services will be Tuesday, March 24, 2009, at 2:00 p.m. at Hazlehurst United Methodist Church with burial following at Felder’s Cemetery in Summit, MS. Stringer Family Funeral Services in Hazlehurst is handling arrangements.
Mr. Pyron was born in Yazoo City, was preceded in death by his parents, Townsend Hemphill Pyron and Allie Latham Pyron; and sister, Effie Elizabeth Lewis.
He graduated from Greenwood High School and received a full scholarship to play football for Mississippi State University as a Defensive Tackle from 1948 – 1951. He earned an “M” letter each year he played for the Bulldogs and was selected an All-SEC Defensive Tackle in 1951. Shag graduated with a Business degree from Mississippi State in 1952. He was drafted by the Chicago Cardinals in 1952 and played in the Canadian League.
His love for football led him to south Mississippi where he was the Line Coach at Southwest Mississippi Junior College and later became the head football coach at Hazlehurst High School. It was while he was coaching at Hazlehurst, Shag met and married his wife of 53 years, Carlene Freiler. After his coaching years, Shag worked for Stribling Puckett as a Heavy Equipment Sales Representative and later served as Highway Commissioner, Southern District for the State of Mississippi from 1967 to 1979. Up until his death he joined his sons in the timber business and ran the Brookhaven office of Copiah Forest Products, Inc.
Shag was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Hazlehurst for 55 years. He was ordained and installed as a Deacon of the church on June 29, 1969. He also served as a member of the Hazlehurst School Board. Shag was a loyal supporter of his alma mater, Mississippi State University and devoted much time encouraging numerous young athletes. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather and most definitely a friend to all.
Survivors include: wife, Carlene Freiler Pyron; sons, William Freiler Pyron and wife, Bethany of Jackson, Robert Craig Pyron and wife, Courtney of Crystal Springs, John Carl Pyron and wife, Johna of Hazlehurst; and eight grandchildren, Ali, Emily, Rob, Mary Landrum, Elizabeth, Colter, Amanda and Latham.
