Sarah Barr
Sarah Mayfield Barr, 91, died at home in Crystal Springs, on Friday, July 31, 2009.
Graveside services were Saturday, August 1, 2009 at Fellowship Cemetery in Taylorsville. Stringer Family Funeral Services in Crystal Springs handled arrangements.
Mrs. Barr was born October 9, 1917, to Neoma Jane Norris Mayfield and Ira Cook Mayfield. An educator for many years and a graduate of the University of Southern Mississippi, Mrs. Barr worked with public schools and the Mississippi Cooperative Extension Service, retiring from the Extension Service in 1979. Mrs. Barr was a member of the First Baptist Church of Crystal Springs.
On October 11, 1937, she married Charles James Barr. As the wife of a Navy Commander, she traveled extensively and lived in the Philippine Islands, The Republic of Panama, and throughout the United States.
Mrs. Barr was preceded in death by her husband, Cmdr. Charles James Barr, USN, two sisters, Molline Mayfield Keyes and Luna Cooke Mayfield Metts, three brothers, Tom Mayfield, I. C. Mayfield, Jr. and William Cato Mayfield, Sr.
Mrs. Barr was a remarkable woman. Widowed at a young age, she devoted her life to providing for and nurturing her daughters.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to Hospice Ministries, St. Jude Children’s Hospital, Baptist Children’s Village or a charity of your choice.
Survivors include: daughters Rae Marie Barr, Ida Beth Barr McIntosh, Ellen Barr Sneddon and husband Johnny Sneddon and Sarah Barr Douglas and husband Tom Douglas; grandchildren CeeJaye Sneddon Peters, Elise Wade Noone, Alicia McIntosh Jackson and Ernest Lee McIntosh, Jr. as well as great grandchildren.
