Betty Taylor Dabney

Betty Taylor Dabney, 89, of Crystal Springs, died Wednesday, May 22, 2013 at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center.
Visitation will be Friday from 9:00 to 10:00 AM at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church,  204 West Railroad Avenue, Crystal Springs. Memorial service will be Friday at 10:00 AM at the church with interment at the Crystal Springs Cemetery.

Betty was born on November 11, 1923, to Warren and May Taylor in Louisville, MS. She graduated from Louisville High School and Mississippi State College for Women with a major in piano.  She furthered her education at New York City’s Julliard School earning her Masters in Music.

After returning to Jackson, she worked for her father in the family business, Taylor Machinery.  While in Jackson, she was the assistant organist at First Baptist Church.

She met Dr. Moncure Dabney in 1961, on a blind date that both of them were reluctant to accept.  They married three months later.
Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Crystal Springs gained a new member as well as an accomplished musician. She served as the organist there for 47 years.  She was very generous with her time and her talents.  She served as a substitute pianist or organist for many churches and organizations.

Betty was honored by the Chaminade Club of Mississippi in 2008, having served 50 years as a member. She served as treasurer of the P.E.O.-Chapter F of Jackson, was an enthusiastic supporter of the Jackson Symphony, and a member of the Casual Club.  Betty was a charter member of the Crystal Springs Junior Auxiliary, a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and a member and past president of the McDowell Music Club.  She was a member of the Sewing Circle, Book Club, various bridge clubs, and a volunteer music appreciation teacher at Copiah Academy.   She was a distinguished member of the Huntin’ and Fishin’ Club of Crystal Springs.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Warren Greer Taylor, her parents, Warren and May Taylor, and her husband, Dr. Moncure Dabney.

Survivors include: daughter Gigi Dabney Smith (Jeff), grandsons Brandon Taylor Smith, William Moncure Smith, Benjamin Victor Smith and Jacob Warren Smith, brother, Larry Taylor (Peggy) of Jackson and numerous nieces and nephews.
