Hubert Ratliff

Hubert Tinnin Ratliff, Jr., 83, formerly of Hazlehurst, died Friday, March 28, 2014 in Ridgeland.

Visitation will be held Monday, March 31 from 10am-noon at First Baptist Church, Hazlehurst. Funeral services will be at 2pm in the church sanctuary. Burial will follow in Natchez Trace Memorial Park in Madison.

Mr. Ratliff was born Aug. 27, 1930 in Clinton and graduated from Clinton High School in 1948. He attended Mississippi State University where he was a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity, Air Force ROTC and was head cheerleader. After graduation from MSU he was commissioned into the Air Force as a 2nd Lt. He served in Korea during the Korean conflict.

After his military service, Mr. Ratliff went to work for Gulf Oil. He later worked for Farm Bureau in Yazoo City and became Agency Manager of Copiah Co. Farm Bureau in 1974. Mr. Ratliff earned his CLU designation and numerous other awards during his career with Farm Bureau.

He was a 50+ year member of the Lions Club and received the Melvin Jones Fellow Award for dedicated humanitarian service from the Lions Club. He was an active member of First Baptist Church in Hazlehurst where he served as a deacon and Sunday School teacher. He was also very involved in the Crystal Springs Chamber of Commerce serving as president. Mr. Ratliff was instrumental in starting Duck’s Unlimited Chapters in both Yazoo Co. and Copiah Co. After moving to The Orchard in Ridgeland last spring he joined First Baptist Church, Jackson.

He is preceded in death by his parents Hubert Tinnin and Katrina Webb Ratliff.
Survivors include: his wife of 62 years Dorthea Drane Ratliff of Ridgeland; son Rodger Ratliff (Christi) of Plano, TX; daughters Carol Elliott (Tom) of Aiken, S.C. and Diane Lisenbe (Tim) of Madison; sister, Betty Ratliff Lewis of Anderson, S.C.; and four grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the building fund at First Baptist Church Hazlehurst, 151 Caldwell Dr, Hazlehurst, MS 39083; The Baptist Children’s Village, 114 Marketridge Dr, Ridgeland, MS 39157; French Camp Academy, 1 Fine Pl, French Camp, MS 39745; or the charity of your choice.
