Joy Ann Burt Bell

Joy Ann Burt Bell, 80, of Crystal Springs, died Thursday, December 11, 2014 at Hardy Wilson Memorial Hospital.

Visitation will be 4pm-7pm Sunday at Stringer Family Funeral Home in Crystal Springs.  Services will be 10am Monday at Stringer Family Chapel with burial at Harmony Cemetery.  Stringer Family Funeral Home in Crystal Springs is handling arrangements.

Joy was a native of Crystal Springs, and a 1952 graduate of Crystal Springs High School. As noted in the annual yearbook “Her name expresses her personality plus; she’s a joy to her teachers, her school and to us”.  She went on to receive her B.S. degree in 1956 from Mississippi College.
From 1957 to 1974 Joy was married Dr. Loren D. Breland, Jr. and joyously welcomed their son Loren Dewey Breland III during that time. A devoted mother throughout her life, she and her son enjoyed a close relationship and exciting travel. Always wanting to look her best, she wore well the adage that style is not what you wear, but how you wear it. She exemplified a classic style in daily living, not only as adornment on the outside, but in greater part by a beautiful inner spirit. She clothed herself immaculately in strength, kindness and faith.
Joy always felt a strong sense of service to others which led her into many and various leadership positions. Serving as the President of the Crystal Springs Junior Auxiliary, Joy was cited by the US Department of Justice for her participation in the Community Development of Alternatives to Drug Abuse program in 1973.
She served as the Director of the Jackson Association Life Underwriters in 1979-1980 and was the Mississippi state chairman of the National Association Life Underwriters Conference that year. She later became an insurance executive with Mutual of New York, Southern Region, based in Atlanta, Georgia, and a member of the Million Dollar Round Table and Women Leaders Round Table, AAUW.
Joy considered herself a lifelong resident of Crystal Springs, although selling properties in the Retirement Communities industry required she reside for a time in the Kansas, Missouri, Massachusetts, New York, and Florida areas. In 1997 Joy married Graham Bell and moved to Plano, Texas where she became a Realtor associated with the premier Ebby Halliday firm until returning to Crystal Springs in 1999.
Upon their return, Joy and Graham enjoyed living on Joy’s family homestead, renovating the house, watching the peacocks, and spoiling her beloved Yorkie, “Princess.” She loved singing in the First Baptist Church choirs until health issues prevented her from continuing in her remaining 15 years, suffering, but never complaining.  A chair in the Soprano section of a heavenly choir was anxiously awaiting her arrival on December 11, 2014.
Joy is survived by her husband, Alexander Graham Bell of Crystal Springs MS, son Loren Dewey Breland III of Austin TX, step-daughter Kathleen D’Ann (Scott) Lehmann of TX and 3 grandsons Joshua Steven, Matthew Alexander, and Andrew Clifton all of Little Elm, TX.
