Tommy Thompson

Tommy Tucker Thompson, 82, passed away on April 26, 2026, at his residence in Hazlehurst.

Mr. Thompson was born on June 18, 1943. He dedicated 37 years of service to the railroad industry, working with Illinois Central and Canadian National Railroad. He was a proud member of the National Association of Retired and Veteran Railway Employees. Outside of his work, Tommy found great joy in fishing and hunting. Although he had not been in a while, he also enjoyed his daily gatherings with friends at the “head table” at Stark’s Breakfast Club. And always made it a point to be there because he said he would be the topic of conversation if he missed a day.

Mr. Thompson graduated from Hazlehurst High School in 1961. The Class of 1961 had regular reunions for 65 years. Tommy Tucker attended most of them in his later years, missing the latest one the day before he passed away.

He is survived by his wife, Ethel Kees Thompson; his daughter, Rebecca Thompson Wynne (Mike); his grandchildren, John Tucker and Michael Wynne; stepchildren, Anne Smith (Stanley) and Scott Long, Joseph Wooten, Jay Wooten (Kylie) and Justin Wooten (Sara); and his step-grandchildren, Mary Parker and Lila Geddie, Amelia Wooten, Maci Wooten, Grant Wooten, Knox Wooten, Nash Wooten and Brady Wooten.

Mr. Thompson was preceded in death by his wife, Linda Quick Thompson, and his parents, William Tucker and Nell Chadwick Thompson. Tommy and Linda enjoyed nine wonderful years together, traveling and caring for each other until her death in 2011. Tommy said that those were the best nine years of his life. One of their favorite places to visit was Estes Park, Colo. They loved staying in the cabins there and feeding the Golden-mantled ground squirrels peanuts. They also enjoyed visiting Marsh Harbour in the Abaco Islands, Bahamas, as noted on the tag on the front of his pick-up truck.

The family would like to give a very special thank you to Kaye Mosley for being their angel during this very difficult time. An additional thank you to Regina Sutton, Jena Tynes, and Pat Barnes with Arden Hospice.

Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, April 29, at Hazlehurst Cemetery. In the event of inclement weather, there will be a service at Stringer’s Funeral Home in Hazlehurst at 1. Dr. Stan Weatherford will be officiating the service.

Pallbearers will be John Tucker and Michael Wynne, James and Jonathan Woodard, Jay Wooten, and Danny Allen.

Honorary pallbearers are Justin Wooten, Randy Shealy, Skippy Smith, and Ace Gandy.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Arden Home Health and Hospice Brookhaven in Mr. Thompson’s name.
